Lt. Col. SAMUEL T. HUGHES

Samuel Hughes served in Company I, 9th Illinois Infantry. The Samuel T. Hughes Post 53 G.A.R. of Collinsville was named for him.

OWEN JACKSON PORTER

Owen Porter (1848 - 1909), along with his father, David D. Porter, served in the Company B, 144th Illinois Infantry as prison guards at the

Alton Confederate Prison. They were both from Elsah, Jersey County, Illinois. David Porter contracted

dysentery and died in 1865 while serving at the prison. Owen served his one-year term and was mustered out July 1865.

Owen moved to Whiteside County, Illinois, then to Texas. He was known for his poetry, and wrote many poems about the war.

Collinsville's only Confederate veteran, buried in Glenwood. Sgt. William H. Thompson, Company D, 14th Tennessee Infantry, C.S.A.

Bartholomew Vujtech served as a private in Company K, 144th Illinois Infantry (Civil War). He was a merchant & tailor in Collinsville.

Bugler Moritz Wilhelm served in Company E, 2nd Illinois Cavalry (Civil War). He operated a furniture & undertaking business in Collinsville.

THOMAS ALBERT RIGGIN

                                                                     SYLVESTER 'BUD' BLOEMKER                                                                               GERALD BLOEMKER

These Madison County brothers served in World War II. 'Bud' was drafted into the Army, and later volunteered for the 82nd Airborne Division, Paratroopers. This division was the first to land in the invasion of Normandy. His tour of duty expanded to France, Italy and Germany. He returned home with no serious injuries, although he never spoke much of his experiences.   Gerald was drafted into the Army and spent his time fighting with Company H of the 1st Infantry. He earned the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army of Occupation Medal, Japan. Their mother was Anastacia Rosalia Depke Drexelius Bloemker. Their father was Oscar William H. Bloemker, who served in World War I.  Submitted by
